SKERRIES & BALBRIGGAN HARBOURS IDENTIFICATION OF DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Balbriggan & Skerries harbours are located in North county Dublin and fall under the jurisdiction of Fingal County Council. Responsibility for Balbriggan and Skerries harbours was handed over to FCC by Ministerial Order on the 30th of June 2004 from the Dublin Port Company. Balbriggan harbour is the larger of the two harbours. It is believed to be 240 years old and comprises of two piers, the east pier and the west pier. The west pier was extended at a later date to form the second outer harbour. It is a busy fishing harbour with many fishing related activities taking place on the harbour quays.
Skerries harbour comprises one pier which has been in existence in one form or another for hundreds of years. A new pier extension was constructed in 1968 by the office of public works funded by the state and Dublin city Council. The harbour is used by a number of fishing vessels of various types, to a lesser degree than Balbriggan. Skerries sailing club presently moor their leisure boats in the shelter of the harbour.
Royal Haskoning Consultant Engineers have recently completed a Report on behalf of Fingal County Council titled “Skerries and Balbriggan Harbours, Identification of Development Opportunities “ which can now be downloaded below.
