BROWN BINS - ORGANIC WASTE
The introduction of a separate bin collection for organic (kitchen and garden) waste was a new departure for the greater Dublin region and the success of the venture depended entirely on your participation and co-operation. We are delighted to report that thanks to your efforts we have been successful in diverting an average of 25% to 30% of waste from the black bin. Up to now this would have gone directly to landfill where it is responsible for the generation of landfill gases. So by making the best use of your brown bin you are not only keeping household waste costs down but you are also helping the environment.

WHERE TO NEXT
Fingal County Council is currently arranging for the treatment of the organic waste collected by its brown bin service at a number of locations as follows:

- Acorn Recycling Ltd, Tipperary
- Waddocks Composting, Carlow
- O’Tooles Composting,  Carlow

These facilities treat the waste to Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Food standards for reuse in agriculture and landscaping uses. No landfill gases are generated by the waste, reducing our greenhouse gases.  If you would like more information in relation to the Brown Bin service please contact the Brown Bin helpline on 8905473 or email brownbins@fingalcoco.ie

What bags can I use in my brown bin?

Fingal County Council recommends that households wrap any food waste in 2 sheets of old newspaper to deter flies and reduce odours, and to place sheets of light cardboard at the sides and bottom of the bin to keep it clean.  However you can also use compostable bags.  Not all biodegradable bags are compostable or suitable for your brown bin. Compostable bags are required to breakdown within 45 days. Biodegradable bags do not have a defined time for breaking down and may take up to 2 years, which means they are unsuitable for the brown bin.
