Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009

The new regulations will cover a broad range of commercial outlets, including shops, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, pubs and office canteens. The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government has published the Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 on the source-segregation of food waste generated in the commercial sector, which are intended to require the separate collection and biological treatment (through composting, biogas production or other suitable forms of recovery) of specified food waste arising in commercial premises.

Producers of food waste will be required to segregate food waste, ensure that it is collected by authorised waste collectors and then recovered at an authorised recovery facility.

These regulations are part of a response to reduce the amounts of biodegradable waste going to landfill, as required under the EU Landfill Directive.

The Waste Enforcement Section of this department will be implementing and enforcing the new Regulations. We are in the process of appointing authorised officers to carry out inspections and will be writing to all concerned in the 2nd Quarter of 2010 in respect of businesses obligations under the regulations.
