What are Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs)?
There are a number of Architectural Conservation Areas in Fingal, known as ACAs for short, see list below. These are areas, places, groups of structures or townscapes that are of special architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural scientific, social or technical interest/value or contribute to the appreciation of Protected Structures.
How are ACAs designated?
ACAs are designated as part of the Development Plan process, either during a review of the county Development Plan or as a variation of the plan.
What are the planning implications if a building is located with an ACA?
In ACAs the protection generally relates to the external appearance of the area or group of structures. So any works that would have an impact on the exterior would require planning permission, such as changes of original roofing material, windows, boundary walls, etc., the breaking open/widening of window and door openings or shopfronts, or the construction of any new features to the front such as porches or extensions. General guidance for works in ACAs in provided in the pdf document at the end of this page. In addition more detailed "Statements of Character" are being produced for each ACA which will give more detailed guidance on works within a specific ACA. The Statements of Character for a number of ACAs have been approved by Council and are available to download from the link to ACA Statements of Character.
