Biodiversity
The variety of life on the earth is often referred to as biological diversity or biodiversity. It includes all the life forms on the planet – everything from trees to seeds, from mammals to birds and fish, from our gardens to our coast and countryside.
We all depend on biodiversity for our basic needs. Our food, our clean air and water, the timber we use in construction, the medicines which make us better come from the living world around us. We depend entirely on the web of life to sustain our lives and livelihoods. We are lucky in Fingal to have a wealth of wildlife so close to a major urban centre. Our coast and islands, our countryside, our rivers and streams, our fields and hedgerows, our plants and gardens, have a range of habitats which are home to a large variety of plants and animals.
We often take this for granted. We forget that we need to maintain the diversity of life on earth in order to ensure our own well being into the future. While important initiatives are being undertaken by Governments, local action is also needed to take care of biodiversity. By acting locally we join with communities around the world in safeguarding and sustaining local biodiversity.
