Landscape
The landscape we see around us today is the result of natural forces and human endeavour over a long period of time. Since the first settlers arrived in Final over 8,000 years ago the land and landscape has been moulded and constantly changed to give us the coast, countryside, towns and villages we are all familiar with today. Our landscape gives us a sense of place and can be a source of well being, and, although our landscapes have changed constantly throughout history, inspiration for us too.
Today our ability to change the landscapes around us quickly and decisively has grown rapidly with the growth of technology. We need to ensure that change is positive, in its effects, that landscapes we value are protected and enhanced and those that are degraded are rehabilitated. Fingal has many areas of high quality landscape including the coast, the Liffey Valley, other river valleys, Howth Head, and the Naul Hills area.
The Planning and Development Acts 2000 – 2007 enable local authorities to designate Landscape Conservation Areas and Special Amenity Areas to protect and enhance the landscape of an area. Special Amenity Area Orders are in place for the Liffey Valley and Howth.
