Leakage Control
Water Conservation and Leakage Control
Water is a valuable resource when one considers both the production and distribution costs. Hence it has been and will continue to be, the subject of a Water Conservation project. This project seeks to achieve efficiency of supply by offsetting an increase in water demand against reduced losses from leakage. Prior to the commencement of the project the unaccounted for water was estimated at 44%, which has since been reduced to 22% by the end of 2008. Leaks in the network are actively pursued and further reduction is anticipated, with a target of 16% in 2016.
The implementation of the Water Conservation project saw state of the art telemetry and GIS systems installed covering the Greater Dublin area. The telemetry system is the backbone of the project as it collects and stores data from hundreds of district flow meters. This allows for areas with unusual consumption figures to be targeted by the Leakage Teams. The GIS system stores the position and details of the watermains. This includes details such as diameter, material and age. The combination of the telemetery and GIS systems allow for the efficient management of the water supply network. For example when a main bursts, it is easy to identify how water can be diverted around the burst while keeping the disruption to other users to a minimum. The system also allows for a more accurate analysis of the performance of the network and is used to aid in the future planning and upgrades.
How to report a burst water main/leaking stop-cock.
If you see a burst water main/leaking stop-cock please report it to Water Services immediately by calling 01-8906211/6212 (9am to 5pm Mon-Thurs, 9am to 4.30 Friday). After 5pm and weekends please call our Emergency Number 01-8731415.
