Water Conservation Schools Campaign
On the 29th March 2007 the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Dick Roche, T.D. launched Fingal County Council’s ‘Mr. Drippy’ Water Conservation Campaign for Schools at the Sacred Heart of Jesus N.S. Huntstown, Dublin 15.
The campaign running in conjunction with 6 other local authorities is based around a character who explains, in a fun and simple way, the story of our drinking water - where it comes from and ultimately where it ends up. Mr. Drippy also gives us simple tips on how to reduce the amount of water we use every day.
Former Director of Water Services, PJ Howell commenting at the launch explained the importance of expanding Fingal’s water conservation campaign, which is in its 3rd year to primary schools. “From our experience with the Green Schools Programme, we have been shown time and again that it is our youngest residents who are often the best champions of key environmental messages including the message of water conservation”
The ‘Mr. Drippy’ campaign will eventually be rolled out to each of the primary schools in the Fingal area, but initially to the schools participating in the Green Schools Programme.
The key message we want to put forward to our residents and staff is that water is not only an extremely valuable resource but also an extremely scarce one and with the county continuing to expand it is now more important than ever to conserve this limited resource. Simple changes in how we use our water can have a dramatic effect on the available supply.
Mr Drippy’s 5 tips for saving water
1. When your choppers need brushing….don’t leave the tap gushing!
2. Be a leaky tap detective! report them to Water Services
3. Say ‘NO’ to the garden hose! Use a watering can instead
4. Don’t let the tap run! Keep a jug in the fridge instead
5. Spread the word! Water conservation starts with you!
