Maeve Devoy describes The Red Balloon - her creative writing workshop for 8 – 12 year olds. “Firstly I chat to the students about how it was always my dream to write a book (when I was their age) and how I achieved it. I consider myself The Red Balloon in my story, so I then chat with the students about their dreams and about how they can be the red balloon of their own stories. For years I have crafted my own notebooks, so we very quickly then make a notebook each, which will be where the students then write and draw out their story, The Red Balloon. I have a frame/shape for the stories, so by the end of the workshops, the students have not only conquered their dreams, but have penned their very first book!”

Writing in the Crevices - The Art of Flash Fiction - a talk by Shauna Gilligan. In China flash fiction stories are called ‘smoke-long’ stories. They promise “to let the reader relish the sights and sounds of an entire make-believe world before he or she has time to finish one delicious cigarette”. (Shouhua Qi) This two-hour workshop on flash fiction is for writers at all stages of their writing career – from beginner to published author. In this workshop, Shauna Gilligan invites you to examine the craft of flash fiction, or short-short fiction, or ‘smoke-long’ fiction focusing on plotting and planning as a way into the creative process by firstly reading from examples, and then using these pieces as a basis for your own writing”. Shauna Gilligan writes and teaches short and long fiction. Her stories have been published in places such as The Stinging Fly, writing.ie, Crannóg and The New Welsh Review. In 2016, she was the Community Writer-in-residence with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (in conjunction with the Irish Writers’ Centre and Dublin City Council). She holds a PhD (Writing) and has given master classes and invited readings at events such as the West Cork Literary Festival, London Irish Centre (UK) and Vanderbilt University (USA). www.shaunaswriting.com
