Healthy Ireland is a government initiative which aims to create a  society where everyone can enjoy mental and physical health, and where wellbeing is valued and supported.     The Healthy Ireland initiative came about because of concerns that the current health status of people living in Ireland – including lifestyle trends and health inequalities

The Healthy Ireland initiative came about because of concerns that the current health status of people living in Ireland – including lifestyle trends and health inequalities – is leading us towards a future that is dangerously unhealthy, and very likely unaffordable (http://www.healthyireland.ie/).

The many risks to the health and wellbeing of people living in Ireland include some which are obvious: issues such as overweight and obesitymental healthsmokingalcohol anddrugsHealthy Ireland seeks to provide people and communities with accurate information on how to improve their health and wellbeing and seeks to empower and motivate them by making the healthy choice the easier choice (http://www.healthyireland.ie/).

Healthy Ireland at your Library is an exciting new service which has developed from the Healthy Ireland initiative. Public libraries across Ireland are currently delivering the nationwide Healthy Ireland at your Library programme which will establish libraries as a valuable source within the community for health information.  The service is available FREE of charge and will address 6 key areas: Healthy ChildhoodHealthy Eating and Active LivingWellbeing and Mental HealthPositive AgeingAlcohol and Tobacco Free.

Healthy Ireland at your Library will provide the following  resources, services and support to Library users and communities FREE of charge:

  • A comprehensive collection of books on health and wellbeing
  • Online Health Information – new e-books, e-audiobooks, e-magazines accessible in your Library or at home
  • Health Information – guidance on access to a range of health information
  • Free talks, discussions and workshops relating to various health and wellbeing topics

Watch out for the Healthy Ireland at your Library  banners and book displays, explore the new and enhanced book collection, go online and discover the range of online services, attend one of the FREE Healthy Ireland events which are being run across Fingal Libraries.
