“When in doubt, go to the library.”

Hermione Granger’s actions, as described by Ron Weasley, are excellent words to live by, we think, so we’re inviting all our borrowers to Blanchardstown Library for our biggest ever celebration of the world of Harry Potter.

Bewitching Blanchardstown enjoyed its inaugural event last year with our young witches and wizards taking part in a Horcrux hunt, and testing their knowledge in our table quiz.

Delighted with the success of that event, and to celebrate the 21st birthday of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, we’re delighted to announce the return of Bewitching Blanchardstown – this time, for an entire day!

On Tuesday, August 14, we will transform the building into our own Hogwarts for magic enthusiasts of all ages.

At 11am, class will begin for 4 – 7 year olds, with a History of Magic lesson (or as we muggles refer to it; a reading of the very first chapter of Harry Potter, followed by arts and crafts).

At 2pm our 7-12 year old students will enrol in the Blanchardstown School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We will test their knowledge on the magical world with a table quiz that rivals even the OWL and NEWT exams. Students will also get the opportunity to follow in Harry’s footsteps, and make their way through difficult challenges in order to retrieve the Philosopher’s Stone.

At 5:15pm, the Daily Prophet newsroom will open its doors to a select group of young journalists, from the age of 12 onwards. During the course of this workshop, we will brainstorm, write, and piece together our own magical newspaper.

The final class of the day is Care of Magical Creatures at 7pm. Hagrid was unable to attend, but we’ve found a more than capable substitute in Dave’s Jungle. All ages are invited to see and hear more about a variety of amazing animals – we promise we won’t have any upset Hippogriffs on site!

We almost forgot about the most important part – the books! Work has been ongoing on this event for the past number of months; preparing props, arranging activities, and sourcing prizes for the House Cup winners. As part of this, we have ordered several copies of the Harry Potter collection; including audio books, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, and books about the Harry Potter films. Whether you’re ready to set off on this magical journey, or are well versed in the wizarding world, they will be available to borrow on the day.

The Blanchardstown School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is fully booked at present, but in celebration of JK Rowling and Harry Potter’s birthdays yesterday, July 31, we are opening the booking for all other events today! To book your place, contact Blanchardstown Library on 01 890 5560, email blanchlibrary@fingal.ie, or call up to the lending desk.

PS: Fancy dress is encouraged; there will be prizes for the best dressed witch, wizard, half-giant, goblin or house-elf, and one for the most original!
