Giro d Italia…well what is it? Its 200 riders travelling up to 65kph in a big flash of colour. And this year it will be racing through Fingal!

Along with many others, I have been working on this event for months now and it is our biggest ever challenge in the Fingal Events Unit. Some of you will remember the Olympic Flame and how much planning that involved; well you you can multiply that and more. Having made a presentation to the businesses yesterday I was delighted with the positive feedback that came from that meeting and every town along the route is “Going Pink” - yep that’s what I said “pink”! (I challenge any of you to tell me why the Giro is Pink by the way).

The event brings huge opportunity to Fingal. One of the stats that the Giro people shared with us is that the event is broadcast to a worldwide audience of 177 million! Just imagine if only 1% of viewers chose to visit Fingal for cycling or to enjoy our beautiful coastline. This is a massive (I couldn’t do the maths) marketing opportunity for Fingal!

The event will be a great boost to the local hospitality industry. If you run a local business tweet us a photo and we will promote it. Tens of thousands of spectators will line the route and the atmosphere will be electric! One thing the Irish know is how to celebrate and that we will.

Keep an eye out here for regular updates of our “Brand Fingal” campaign for the Giro, I will be making a big announcement next week that will put us all over the media!

By the way, I hear a rumour that the councillors are dressing up in pink for this Monday’s Council meeting…watch this space….
