What a remarkable day we had in Fingal yesterday when our beautiful coastal towns and villages were beamed across the world as millions tuned in to watch the Giro d’Italia on its way from Armagh to Dublin. An estimated 30,000 spectators lined the Giro route from Balbriggan to Baldoyle and watched as world class riders and their entourage sped past in a blaze of pink on their way to the finish in Dublin City Centre. The Council supported family fun events in Balbriggan, Lusk and Malahide were really well attended and added to the sense of excitement as the crowds eagerly awaited the arrival of the peleton.

I attended in Malahide myself and the facilities and atmosphere was excellent especially when the Giro official caravan made its 2nd of 2 scheduled stops in Fingal, the first happening in Georges Square in Balbriggan. Fingal County Council also plan to make the record books following the 2014 Giro d’Italia when officials from the Guinness World Book of Records confirm that the specially commissioned grass graphic on the lawn at Ardgillan, covering a massive 7 acres, is the largest ever graphic of its kind. We hope to get arial shots of this feat in the next few days.

The crowds that showed up throughout Fingal to see the Giro d’Italia and take part in this international tourist event, was a great testament to the work and communications put in place, in advance of yesterday’s race. Fingal County Council Events and Operations staff have put months of planning into making sure this event could go ahead. We did a really professional job and once again, you have made us proud.

I would like to say a tremendous thanks to all concerned for the great work and contribution to make the 2014 Giro d’Italia event such a fantastic success for Fingal.
